Rates and rooftop solar, utility by utility

Solar economics are decided by the company on your bill, not by your state — the retail rate you stop paying and the export rule you sell under are both set at the utility level. These are the 507 US utilities serving at least 25,000 residential accounts, about 130,066,741 households in total, with what each charged and how many of its customers already went solar.

Source: US Energy Information Administration, Form EIA-861, data year 2024. Rates are residential revenue divided by residential sales on bundled service — an annual all-in average, not a current tariff.

Where rooftop solar is already normal

Utilities with at least 100,000 residential accounts, ranked by net-metered systems per thousand customers. The spread is the story: the top of this table is two orders of magnitude above the bottom of the national distribution, and almost none of that gap is sunshine.

The most expensive electricity in America

Same size cut-off, ranked by what a residential account actually cost per kWh across the year. A high rate is the single strongest predictor that solar pays here, because what you save is the electricity you stop buying.
